Experimental and molecular dynamic studies of the mechanisms of the mechanical behavior of polycrystalline Ti samples subjected to scratching were performed. It was found that the crystallographic orientation of Ti grains substantially affects their mechanical properties as well as the residual depth of scratch grooves and the formation of pileups at scratch flanks. The parameters of the scratch grooves in the grains with different orientations were shown to be in disagreement with their mechanical characteristics that is due to changing the actual mechanical response of the grains during application of combined normal and tangential load. The effect of grain boundaries and twin boundaries on the plastic ploughing of Ti grains with different crystallographic orientations was studied.
