330 _aThe contributions of the mechanisms of strain hardening of differentially quenched rails are quantitatively analyzed as functions of the distance from the roll surface. The carbon distribution in the structure of rails after ground tests is studied. The main contribution to the hardening of rail steel is shown to be made by long-range stress fields and the dislocation substructure that forms during deformation. Substantial carbon redistribution is detected in rails during operation.
